Uttar Pradesh Badminton Association (UPBA) has hired Indonesia’s Hendra Mulyono as their coach for young shuttlers. He will groom young talent in the badminton academy at Lucknow by working under the supervision of UPBA.
Last year, the Uttar Pradesh badminton Academy was awarded with the status of national training centre after which it has grown into a hub of training for young shuttlers from all over India.
Thomas John, a famous badminton coach, has been working with UPBA and has been preparing young shuttlers to become better players. However, he completed his contract and now Indonesia’s Hendra has replaced John as the new coach of UPBA.
Hendra has been spending his time with junior players in the 36th Junior National Badminton Championship, in Jaipur, to observe the potential shuttlers for his training programme and will start working in a few days at the academy in Lucknow.
The Indonesian has been playing at international level in different tournaments from the Djarum Badminton Club, the most renowned club in Indonesia. Now he will train India’s junior shuttlers and is expected to elevate their level of play in all aspects of the game.
TPS Puri, vice president of the Badminton Association of India (BAI), said that Hendra has also coaching experience and will be produce productive results while working on the junior shuttlers.
He said, “Hendra has been a good shuttler at the international level. Although the 24-year-old has given up playing at the international level of late, he has coaching experience as well.”
He further added, “As the Academy at Lucknow has been given recognition by the Government of India, important camps would be organised there and Hendra will be helping not only the Academy trainees but also the India team campers. Presently, he is on a two-month visa and we are hopeful of it getting extended by a year.”
Puri further expressed that BAI is looking forward to produce potential shuttlers from the academy in Lucknow for the upcoming next two editions of Olympic Games in 2016 and 2020.
Hiring an Indonesian coach is a good move for the promotion of badminton and will produce good results by introducing more talented young shuttlers from India.
