On Monday, August 27, Nagenahira Nagas secured their fourth win in the ongoing Sri Lanka Premier League, after beating Uva Next by six wickets, at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.
After restricting the opposition on a daunting tally of 160, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AD-Mathews-c913’s unbeaten knock of 43, steered the side across the finish line in 19.1 overs.
Earlier, needing 161 runs to win, openers Imran Nazir and MDUS Jayasundera hammered a stand of 41, before Jayasundera was caught behind off http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JDP-Oram-c1681 after scoring a knock of nine runs off 11 balls.
The duo of Nazir and TR Birt then steered the side to a total of 63, before Uva struck for the second time by nabbing Nazir.
With the hard-hitting batsman out of the way, it was Uva’s chance to crawl back in the game, and give their opponents a run for their money.
Nonetheless, Birt and AD Mathews forged another intimidating partnership, refusing to let the bowlers gain an upper hand.
The two batsmen launched a blatant attack on the bowlers, putting Uva on the back foot, as the bowling side now had to contain the flow of runs instead of going after the batsmen.
Finally with 109 on the board, the devastating partnership met its demise on the wicket of Birt, who perished after hitting a knock of 37 off the bat.
Nagas got Goosebumps when C de Grandhomme became the fourth wicket to hit the pavilion at a time when the side was standing on a total of 131. The batsman was removed by WMC Jayampathi on a score of 10.
However, that was the end of the road for Uva, as AK Perera halted the bowling onslaught, staying unbeaten on 14 till the end of the match.
Nazir was named as the Player of the Match for his profound innings. With this win, the Nagas are now the second best side on the points table after playing six games with only two losses.
