Uzbek athlete fails doping test in Asian Games
An athlete from Uzbekistan became the first person to test positive for a banned substance in the ongoing Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.
Olympic Council of Asia medical commission head Dr Mani Jegathesan announced that judoka Shokir Mumonov, who won a silver medal in the men's 81kg division, tested positive for Methylhexaneamine.
"The athlete has been disqualified from the competition as well as these games and his performance in the competition has been nullified, his medal withdrawn and appropriate adjustment made to the results," Mumonov said in a press conference.
Jegathesan said Mumonov's urine sample, which was collected on Sunday, contained Methylhexaneamine, a substance widely used as a nasal decongestant and a common ingredient in many nutritional supplements. As a result, many athletes claimed that they were unaware of using Methylhexaneamine.
The drug, a component of flower oil, was only added to the list of banned substances recently.
The tests were conducted by the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Beijing laboratory, which also carried out doping tests during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The Uzbekistan Olympic Committee, the International Judo Federation and the WADA have already been informed about Mumonov's test results.
Timurnsshk Nbaev, spokesman for the Uzbekistan delegation, refused to comment on the matter.
Two Uzbek athletes tested positive for doping at the 2006 Doha Asian Games. Elmira Ramileva tested positive for an anabolic steroid and Alexander Urinov was found to have used cannabis.
Myanmar weightlifters Kyi Kyi Than and Oo Mya Sanda, a silver medallist in the 75kg division, were the two other athletes who flunked doping tests in Doha.
In the recent Commonwealth Games in India, Nigerian sprinter Osayomi Oludamola was stripped of her 100m gold medal for using Methylhexaneamine.
The drug also resulted in the ban of six Indian wrestlers and three swimmers ahead of the Games.
