  1. Find two integers that multiply to equal -48, but add to equal -22, which are -24 and 2:

    (u + 2)(u - 24) <===ANSWER

  2. With a negative number, you know the factor will have one negative and one positive factor.

    (U+2)(U-24)

  3. -24 and +2

    When in doubt, use the quadratic formula.

  4. (u-24)(u+2)=0

    u=24

    u=-2

  5. just use the quadratic formula if you're stuck.

    given Ax^2 + Bx + C

    x=(-b+-sqrt(b^2-4ac))/2a

  6. If (u + b)(u + d) = u^2 + u(b + d) + bd = u^2 - 22u - 48, then you're looking for two numbers (b and d) which sum to -22 and product is -48. From the latter, one will be positive and the other will be negative. Given a difference of 22 units, we have either 2 and -24 or -24 and 2. Since we're looking for -22, it must be -24 and 2, so we have our factors (u - 24) and (u + 2). We can go ahead and multiply them to check if we made an undetected mistake somewhere in our reasoning.
