  1. I don't completely agree. Firstly, not all British people are English. Many are Welsh or Scottish and bilingual. English is not the only autochthonous language of the British Isles. There is also Welsh, Scots Gaelic, Cornish (no, it is not extinct) and the French dialects of the Channel Islands.

Secondly, not all English people think English is the best language in the world.

Thirdly, not all Italians rate English. Judging from the questions and answers I've seen, quite a number of Italians resent having their language invaded by English words and I have seen many trenchant criticisms of English on Answers Italia.

  2. I could say:

    Pair-kay Lyee eetal-ee-an-ee nohn skree-vo-no ko-may lyee een-glay-zee?

  3. The obvious answer is that Brits take English for granted, after all isn’t “God an Englishman” (I’m quoting the title of a well known book, where the English make fun of themselves).

Strictly speaking English is the “newest” of the many British languages, it’s the result of a natural evolution, where even the ancient Romans had a hand in it, so you wouldn’t find an Englishman ranting on about the “purity” of his language. It’s evolving every day and maturing, like a vintage wine. Just look at what the Yanks did to it. Continentals who want to keep their language “pure” have no real notion of history. There is no such thing as a “pure” national language in Europe, they are all the result of a long process of intermingling, of osmosis. On the other hand, I personally try to use the local term and avoid neologistical short cuts, even though the Airline Industry I operate in is English based. Try telling someone to “check in at terminal 1” in Italian. Of course you can, but you’ll be using longer, less precise words. And what do your Langue d’Oc neighbours think of French?
