V Shem, Khim Wah power their way to quarter-final round of 2013 Malaysia Grand Prix Gold
Men’s Doubles partners Goh V Shem and Lim Khim Wah forged a fruitful chemistry and secured a quarter-final berth in Yonex Sunrise Malaysia Grand Prix Gold on May 2, 2013.
They were up against a lower ranked duo Terry Hee-Zhao Jiang Terry Yeo and this encounter remained in full swing for 30 minutes.
Both Malaysian campaigners relished full benefits of home ground and wrapped this showdown with a favourable result of 21-15 and 22-20.
The twosome of V Shem and Khim Wah established a strong grip over game immediately in the opening game and maintained that upper hand all the way to final moments.
They launched an intensive attack and gained an immediate advantage by ruling the court in establishing rallies of first set.
This initial lead helped them in next couple of rallies as they did not allow the opposing team to proceed on points table.
Both Men’s Doubles experts employed all of their experience in the game and piled up a mountainous figure before the announcement of one-minute break.
In latter part of the game, V Shem and Khim Wah lost focus for a short span of time and this blunder weakened their grip.
Meanwhile, the Singaporean shuttlers showed some class and narrowed the gap on points table. It was felt that they will come out of their rivals’ influence but then few back-to-back mistakes changed the story.
The higher ranked Malaysian team stormed back with a strong reply and won this set with scoreboard flashing 21-15 margin in their favour.
However, it was not a smooth ride to victory for them as Terry and Zhao showed great fighting spirit in the following game.
This time they did not repeat previous mistakes and matched their competitors’ skills in all departments of game.
They pocketed valuable points at steadily and did not allow their challengers to enjoy a permanent lead.
The game kept swinging between both pairs until the final moments and finally this cliff-hanging tussle ended when V Shem-Khim Wah registered a winning score of 22-20.
Now they will lock horns with an Indonesian duo Alvent Yulianto Chandra-Markis Kido in quarter-final round of Malaysia Open.
