V4 engines approved by WMSC, F1 teams to decide start of usage – Formula 1 news
The World Motor Sport Council meeting in Barcelona on Friday decided that 1.6-litre V4 engines will be used in Formula 1 sport in the near future.
However, the governing body has also decided that the Formula 1 teams will decide through voting when to start using the V4 engines.
In a meeting held in Barcelona, the WMSC along with the Formula 1 governing body decided that the V4 environmental friendly engines will be used in the sport despite the teams not being in their favour.
It is believed that the new engines will be up to 35 percent fuel-efficient and will deliver their maximum potential with improved aerodynamic capability. However, the engines will be confined to 12,000 rpm rather than the current 18,000 rpm which will
be a setback in terms of speed.
Formula 1 teams and engine suppliers have already spoken against the engine change rule by saying that the impact of the V4 on the cost will be more than the usual V8.
The teams said that the cost of developing a new engine for their cars will be more than anticipated and the final product will once again drag the drivers and technicians into a dark age of Formula 1 racing.
However, the decision from the officials seems firm for now because the debate on cutting down the cost and building environmental friendly engines has been long going on.
The meeting also unanimously agreed on some more security improvements in the Formula 1 cars which were appreciated by the Formula One Teams Association.
These regulations include a high nose for the cars which is supposed to minimise the nose-induced accidents, gearbox modification which will limit the numbers of gears and the weight of the car will once again be raised to improve the downforce.
Many other changes which were introduced for the Formula 1 car will start taking effect from the 2013 season, however, the V4 debate is expected to linger on further.
