I am looking into buying a used Mercury Mountaineer with a little less than 60,000 miles on it, any advice on the difference between the V6 or the V8 if I can buy each at around the same price? LIke gas mileage is a big factor and whatever any one else knows about them, i'd appreciate it, thanks

  1. If you plan to tow, get the V8, if not get the V6 and enjoy the slightly better gas mileage.

  2. Very good question... And I own one of these myself......

First, if you are looking for a lower Sales Price, then a V8 will probably be your best bet. Why? Because the V8, like the one I have in my Ford Explorer (same model with Ford name) is considered of LESS value because of the significant amount of gas it will consume.

If, however, you are looking for a compromise between fuel economy and functionality, the V6 is the way to go. They are virtually no different in the power you experience on the drive by itself....

If you are looking to tow toys like a boat or a trailer, then a V8 is a MUST. I tow a boat with my Explorer and it can really handle it with no problem.

You will find that V8 Mountaineers and Explorers are harder to come by. Ford and Mercury sold tons more of these SUV's with V6's.

Change the oil every 3000 miles, and that truck should last to 600,000 MILES!
