I'm spec'ing a PC for home use on the Dell site; given that it will be connected via an Ethernet cable to an existing BT Home Hub router, do I need to include the v92 data/fax modem?

  1. Not unless you are intending to connect it to a phone line and use it a a fax machine as well. If your not going to do that then all you need is the NIC card [Ethernet] for the broadband.

  2. the only reason you would need a modem these days is if it was a laptop and you were away from home and needed to dialup. given the number of wireless hotspots available these days thats unlikely, or a dying requirement.

if the machine is being used with an ethernet connection to a router I'd drop it. if you subsequently find you need a modem you can buy an external modem for not a lot of money (more than the OEM part)

  3. nope

  4. No, modem is used for dial up not broadband, enjoy  your Dell when you get it, mine's great
