VCR problem?

I have recently received a used Mitsubishi HS-U20 VCR. After testing it with an old tape I used my good one. It tore up tape after I rewound it so I just assumed it was the tape. After testing it again with the old tape I once again tried my new six hour tape it tore it up again during rewinding. Now I am just using it as a tuner for another TV. It wasn't that I rewound the tape too far because it was split in the middle. Is there any way I can fix the VCR myself? It seems like there is a bent part that cuts the tape on rewind mode. It is to the right of the large cylinder where the tape is held. Maybe that is the problem?

Get a tape rewinder and don't use the VCR's rewinder.
