Question:

VERY EXPERIENCED quarter horse people- pedigree question?

This link is for my quarter horse gelding. He is very relaxed, willing, and soft mouthed, just about ready to start in any direction I want him to go in. I ride mostly in speed events (pole bending, barrels, stake races) with a lot of tight turning. I was wondering if his pedigree gells with that sort of work. I also know what he was bred FOR but I would not like that to cloud your personal judgement of him.

Here is the link to his pedigree (and not a very good picture I'm afraid...)

  1. well he goes back to doc bar on both sides, (also goes back to three bars) so that is awesome.... they are smart, gentle, easy horses (mine is too).... they are great for times events cause they were bread for speed.... they also make EXCELLENT cattle horses.... It is actually one of my favorite lines, so congrats!

  2. if he has/could have the training and haert, any horse with ''DOC'' in the name should be on a cow!

  3. Well your horse is line bred, has Docs lucky Bottom on the Top and the Bottom. Line breeding either works out really well or really bad. Do you have a pic? A lot of cow horse breeding, could be used in reining, cutting, or gaming. You could even get a horse that can pleasure depend on the conformation.

  4. It looks like he's oozing with Three Bars progeny...good stuff.

One that I personally knew was named Three Money...I don't know if they showed him in AQHA for anything but pleasure, but that horse could run barrels like lightning, then turn around and win a western pleasure class without batting an eyelid. The relaxed and willing part combined with the speed could just be another one like Three Money!

I finally got the picture up...he looks good too...and color to boot.  I think you may have just what you are looking for in this guy.  Keep us posted.

  5. Kevin's right!  He's cow bred, NOT barrel bred.  When looking for a barrel horse one of the current lines is the Dash for Cash line.  I don't chase cans, but know a few who do or have done so in the past.

Maybe you should try your hand at cutting or team penning.

  6. That is one extraordinarily well-bred cutting Quarter Horse.  And color too--all I can say, is wow.  What a fantastic horse.  His build is gorgeous too.

I know he probably does not have nearly as much TB as is common for barrel racers.  But I would bet he has the speed, and probably soundness, to do speed events.  I would take great care of him and go ahead with him.  If I wanted a timed-events mount this is exactly the type I would choose, and he would be hard to find.  What a nice horse!  I would not be swayed by the trends toward other types, if you like this horse, I bet he can do it all, and do it well.  Congratulations on your extremely lovely horse.

  7. He looks pretty good. He is cow bred and ranch bres. Doc Bar was bred to be a race horse be became very successful at halter and cutting. I tried to find some specific info on your horses sire and dam but there isnt much. Right now horses wanted are dash for cash foals or grand foals, freanchmans anything and people druel. Some Dash for Cash's have a s***w loose. I have experience with them along with many people I know. Cow bred is pretty good for barrels. They are bred to be quick and fast thinkers. Make sure if you are training him don't do too much cutting or reining training. Their is a happy medium there. If you do too much the horse will start sucking back around the barrels and turning over top of them. Too many trainers get there horses to use there hind end by backing them. I like to teach a horse to get it hind end moving with the back lifted by using the stomach as a transition and then once the horse learns this with forward motion. Ok Ill stop...im getting ahead of myself. I just get too intense sometimes. Passion I guess you could call it.

  8. How much you want for him?

    No really.

He has some really good cow working lines there. I know a lot of barrel races who want that. For the quick start and the ability to wrap themselves around a barrel and be gone before you know it. I think you got your self a good horses there.
