What causes some of the kernels to not pop?

When you're making it the old way.. on the stove!

  1. Same reason they don't pop in the microwave -- the moisture content of those particular kernals is lower than necessary for it to expand into the steam that bursts the kernal

  6. I believe that the heat is not generated evenly on the pot or it maybe that some kernel's are no ready for cooking and may need more time on the stove that the others do
