Question:

VETERINARIANS PLEASE HELP!!! parakeet help!!!?

I've had my parakeet for a year. My parakeet has been sick for a few days, we think. For the past few days, he has been puffed up on the bottom of his cage, not eating or drinking (although I've never once seen him drink anyway, but he must). But today as my mom was cleaning his cage, I hand fed him and he began to ate out of my hand and out of his food container. He's still really puffed up though and looks awful, and he keeps biting at his feathers really harshly, looking like they really are bothering him.

We have a vet appointment tonight at six p.m. But my question is, what is wrong with my bird? Should we spritz him with water, because he might be itchy? What should we do until the appointment tonight?

Thanks a lot!

  1. How would we know what wrong with your bird? The best thing you can do is take it to a bird vet.

  2. please don't rely on anyone saying they are a vet or even a vet tech on here. Vet tech's don't have to take any avian specialist classes, and their are no vet's on here.

Your bird being fluffed up and on the bottom of it's cage is definatley not a good sign. When birds do this is it a very strong sign that something is very wrong. Don't spray any water on him. When your bird is ill the number one thing a vet usually will tell you is to keep him warm until you can get him into the office. Try putting a heat lamp over his cage and putting him in a room where the temp will be warmer. Around 90 is usually a good temp.

Your very smart for making him an appointment for as quick as possible. Birds loose body temp. fast when they are sick, so until you get in there make sure he is nice and warm.

  3. im not a vet so don't rely on my answer please! i was just wondering if you are sure that your parakeet is a male? because this is exactly how my cockateil acted before she layed eggs. she acted very week because she used all her energy in producing eggs.  She pulled at her feathers because she was molting. we had never seen her do this before and it really scared us. we placed food and water on the bottom of her cage and removed all of the other birds. keep in mind you dont have to have a male and a female for the female to lay eggs, she can do it alone they just wont hatch. i hope your bird gets better!
