  1. Costs go beyond the first series of shots, consider monthly flea/ tick and heartworm preventative, good quality food, training, grooming and beyond the basic care and maintenance potentially destroyed furniture and gardens.

  2. For proper puppy care a puppy you must go to the vet and usually you will have 3 rounds of shots (1 every month) months and if you will spay/neuter then this will usually occur around 6 months or so of age for the puppy.  Also you will have to get heart worm pills and probably de-worming treatment (also little pills) as most puppies do have some worms.  You will have to bring in stool samples (puppy p**p in a baggie) and have them test for worms and parasites, etc. for the first couple of visits.  I believe I spent about 250 or so in total on all shots, de-worming and spaying.  this will vary by state and by bet.  Also Licensing fees are usually only $30 or so in most places.

If you don't think you can afford it, or aren't sure, then don't get a puppy.  Dogs are a tremendous amount of time and work to properly train and will be expensive to feed decent food, buy toys for, buy a crate for, take to vet, etc.  If you don't have several hours EVERY day to work with the puppy and give it attention, then don't get a dog.  I walk my little lady every single day for at least 30-45 minutes, usually much longer.

Puppies mature to adults at different ages based on the breed.  Usually around 12-16 months the dog will mature.  However, it is very important to do research on your breed prior to and after getting a puppy to ensure you know everything about the dog.

I know this all sounds a little overdone for getting a dog, but it KILLS me to see people who aren't devoted and aren't prepared who have a dog that they do not care for properly.  It is extremely important to work with the dog and learn about its health as a puppy in order to train the dog to act the way you want it to act, because when it gets older and bigger the dog can become an expensive nuisance (destroying furniture, clothing, health costs, etc.) if not properly trained and cared for.  My puppy went from 10 lbs to 55-60 lbs in 5-6 months!

  3. It depends on the age of the dog and the vaccinations it has already had.

For puppies, there is a series of DHLPPC vaccines that vaccinates against Distemper, Hepititis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus and Coronavirus. These are given between 3-6 weeks of age, with boosters every 3-4 weeks, until 16 weeks of age. The pup will also need a rabies vaccination when old enough, and (if he's been exposed) Lyme, Bortadella, and Giardia.....and it ain't cheap

  4. First of all.....do you REALLY think a VET would have the time to play on the computer!!

Call a Vet in you area and ASK them their shot prices.

    When puppies become dogs:

    Small dog...adulthood about 1yr old.

    Large dog...adulthood about 2yrs old.

  5. you'll have to afford it. risk not getting the dogs shots could be dangerouse. the vbet will work out a payment plan with you if needed.

  6. puppies get 3-4 sets of shots, given 2-3 weeks apart.

they get shots again when a year old..  and every year after that.

rabies vaccines are given between 16weeks-6 months, again at a year, and every 3 years after that.

Pups are considered an adult anywhere from 1-2 years, depending on the breed.  Small dogs mature more quickly than giant breeds.

A dog will easily cost you about $100-200 a month.. depending on the size of the dog, and any special requirements, like grooming... That first year costs even more tho with all the extra shots, spay/neuter, microchip, training, etc

  7. Sounds like you need to do some research.  Google your questions & you will get many sites to choose your information from.  Or just check out the yahoo search engine.  Both will bring up sites that will answer your questions.

You will learn more information by doing this than by asking such general questions.

At the top of this page is a green bar.  In that green bar it says, "Search for questions:",  type your questions there, one at a time, & you will find lots of questions just like yours & all the answers to the questions you ask.

  8. For the health of the dog as well as ease on your wallet I would suggest you take a close look at the recent vaccine protocol.

Many vets are now following this schedule, but many are not.  You need to be informed to prevent over-vaccination, it's unnecessary, it cost you money, and it's potentially hazardous to your pet.

    AGE OF PUP                            VACCINE TYPE

9 - 10 wks                                  Distemper+Parvovirus, MLV (e.g. Intervet Progard Puppy DPV) -and yes, you can specifically ask your vet for this brand and type of vaccine.

    14 wks                                       Same as above

16-18 wks                                   Same as above (optional)

20 wks or older, if allowable by law

                                                       Rabies

1 year                                          Distemper + Parvovirus, MLV

1 year                                          Rabies, killed 3-year product (give 3-4 weeks apart from distemper/parvovirus booster)

    AND

ONLY vaccinate if the dog is healthy.

You could vaccinate the dog yourself.  That's always an option.  But for the well being of any dog you bring home a vet check can help rule out health problems almost immediately.

If your only concern is whether or not you can afford the most basic vet care I think you need to step back and look at the bigger picture.  The care you inquire about is small change compared to the routine care of a dog.
