Hi, I need to hook our pc up to our tv (use it as a monitor) and I was hoping to do it with a max budget of $30-$40. I have only a vga connector on my pc and only coax and rca on my tv (no s-video anywhere). What are my options? I know I can buy a special graphics card or an expensive pc to tv converter, but are there any wires that would work? Does VGA even supply sound data? Could I do vga to the yellow RCA and then do a microphone jack to a red and white rca? If I have to go with a card or converter, what's my cheapest options? Thanks!

  1. What you need is called a "scan converter" - it converts VGA to video.  The cheapest one is more than your budget, but not much more:

VGA is a video signal only, you will need a 1/8 inch stereo to RCA cable to get the audio from the pc to the tv:

  2. no you cant. vga is composd of rgb so you cant connect it

  3. Your TV is too low resolution to be used as a monitor, no matter what wires or video cards you get (SD = 480i ), you will berely be able to see text.

In any case, just buy a video card with HDMI and composite output. Use the composite now and when you get an HD TV, use the HDMI.

  4. Great question. But don't you think it should have been asked in the Computer Categories.

And you need a HDTV any way. Even if you find something to convert the VGA signal on your budget... the picture would be so bad you couldn't see anything any way.

And with the new 1080P tv out there... Someone will be selling a older 720P model for cheap. Maybe for a few hundered you can find a old Vizio 32 inch 720P. And it will most likely have a VGA port and you'll be set.

Now your watching HDTV and have a Computer Screen.
