Hello, I am in my early 20's and heading to vietnam for just over 2 weeks in February next year. Planning to visit Hanoi, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Phu Quoc Island, Halong Bay, Ho Chi Minh City, etc.

Has anyone been to these places before?

Is anyone going at the same time as my gf and myself are?

Whats good to do or see?

Any information and recommendations would be great! Thanks

Jackson

  1. Jackson,

2 weeks is not enough to see all of those places. I've never been to Hanoi although that is where my parents were born. I've been to Nha Trang and of course I lived in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh city). It's a lot cooler in the North during February so make sure to bring enough winter clothes. However, If you go to Saigon, Nha Trang (nice beach) or Phu Quoc Island you don't need any heavy clothes. Ha Long bay is one of Vietnam treasures. You'd love it.

Also we celebrate our New year during February. I don't know for sure it falls on what day in February. We do celebrate New year for 3 days & 10 days off (at least that was used to be). If you want to know more about our culture. This is a good time to blend in with the locals and learn more about it.

    When you're in Hanoi, make sure to eat Pho. That's where Pho originated. Most American are familiar with Pho. When you're in the South, you probably will eat more fruits because we have the most exotic fruits in the world. Try them all. They're all good. Trust me -;

Welcome to our country. I hope you have fun there.

  2. If go to Vietnam, you should all listed above

    - Hanoi is capital city to Vietnam, famous with Hanoi's 36 old streets.

    - Halong is World Natural Heritage recognized by UNESCO, about 150km from Hanoi. You should spend 3day - 2 nights in Halong (1 night staying Junk in Halong and 1 night in Catba)

    - After visit Halong, back to Hanoi then take a flight to Danang City in Central Vietnam, Hoian ancient town is only 30km from Danang.

    - From Hoian or Danang, take flight to Ho Chi Minh City - biggest city in Vietnam. In Ho Chi Minh, you can contact with local travel agents for day trip to Chinatown, Cu Chi tunnel and Mekong delta.

you can go to Cu Chi tunnels to see war tunnels built by the vietnamese during the war, go to Ben Thanh markets to shop but remember to bargain at least 30% or more, go to casino at most hotels to try your luck if you believe so, go to suoi tien park ( biggest in HCM ) during weekends where you can see a lot of people and maybe find yourself a friend too, and not to forget about foot massage costing around 100,000VND/hr and 50,000VND tip for the masseue.

    Have a nice trip (-:

  8. I think all places in Vietnam have their own beauty, everywhere is beautiful and safe for tourists

  9. Been to all of them. Shave a few days off here and there (3 nights in Ha Long? ?? ???) and add a couple of days to go to Sapa!

Ha Noi is good for a month, if not 4 years (I live there) - so, pick your places well!

Check when Tet is - I think it is early February this year. Unless you have friends here, I would recommend that you arrange your schedule to miss Tet. (I am arranging my schedule to make sure I am here for Tet!)

  10. Hi Jackson,

I haven't been there yet. But in January I'm going to be traveling with my Mum and sisters from the coast near Phu Quoc up to half way before we cut across into Laos. Mum has already been intensively planning our itinerary and wants to avoid tourists traps and the slow "tourist buses" which drop you off at hotels where you are forced to accept crappy rooms and they take your passports so you can't leave. The buses are very dangerous, the trains are painfully slow and heaps of tourists get scammed in Vietnam I've heard. So Mum is planning for us to travel mainly by hire car, where you hire a driver as well. That could be much better value if you're in a small group because you could have more choice about where you go, get there faster and be less exposed to people who want to scam you. We are most interested in going to places like My Son, Hue and Hoi An to see historic buildings and great museums. The beaches aren't very nice during the monsoon and the touristy beaches get bad reports for being dirty.

If you want some tips from us just before you go, link to my contact in YA and email me to send you a link to my travel blog in Jan :)

    Cheers.
