  1. I would recommend purchasing a used instrument at a store. Generally the ones on ebay, etc. turn out to need a lot of work. You want something with good sound, and nothing you'll need to spend extra money on in the long run. the ones from ebay generally need new bridges, new bows, and new strings. Which adds up.

    Check out your local music store, and see what they can offer. You can sometimes find some under $100 thats definitely worth it as a beginner. Used instruments are always best. Keep that in mind.

  3. For 1 thing you never buy anything like this over the internet,

    Go to a music store that sells them you hold it you get the feel of it.  you size the neck with your holding hand. check out the bow look to see if it's worped out of shape & the Violin. if you have never had one before find some one in the music indistery friend or  family to go with you.That knows something about Violin's My brother -in -law in Ga gives lessons and can tell you anything you wont to know about Violin's or Fiddles  what the best brand Name to Buy .He plays Blue Grass Music and has for over 50 years.
