VLC media file to mpeg?

When i open DVD's it automatically plays using VLC, I want to be able to extract part of the DVD using virtualdub but doesn't recognise the file. How do I get it to recognise it ?

  1. One way is to use VLC to record the dvd onto your computer (it does that) and then edit the resulting video file.

    Otherwise you need to get the .vob files off the dvd by 'ripping' it and possibly decoding it.

    If the DVD is not protected by any DRM you can simply drag and drop the files from the DVD to your desktop.

    virtualdub is looking for mpeg files I think (which are in effect .vob files with a different extension.
