VRT driver Timo Glock says Virgin are behind their target at the moment – Formula 1 news
Formula 1 Virgin driver Timo Glock has said that the team is set to miss their initial targets in the 2011 Formula 1 season.
He mentioned Virgin did not improve enough over the test sessions and that was not ideal for the team.
The team is happy because they consider themselves that they would be able to compete for Q2 places, where they will start their scoring points in its second season in Formula 1 sport. However, Glock was doubtful this will be possible with MVR-02 car in
Melbourne.
He said, “At the moment, looking at the tests that will be difficult in the first couple of races and I think we will have to wait for the bigger upgrade which comes to Turkey, where everyone will bring an update.”
The 28-year-old German driver underwent an appendix operation on March 2, 2011 in a Swiss hospital. Following the routine surgery and his quick recovery, the doctors discharged him from the hospital.
With regards to Glock’s race performance, he joined Virgin Racing Team in the 2010 season.
In the 2011 pre-season Formula 1 test sessions, his overall performance was not inspiring because his MVR-02 car experienced massive problems over the test runs.
In the Valencia testing days, Glock drove along his teammate Jerome d’Ambrosio and showed poor performance for the team.
Other than the Valencia drive, he also did not perform well in the Jerez test, except on the day two. In the third Barcelona test, he tried his best to set the pace of his new MVR-02 car but did not adjust the top position of the team.
Glock missed the last pre-season test following his appendix surgery, but he was sure he would be fit for the 2011 season opener in Melbourne. The team still expects a lot from the VRT driver as they are looking forward to a successful upcoming season.
He spoke ahead of Virgin’s worst progress and told the media, “As far as I see it at the tests, we are still away from the midfield teams and Q2 will be difficult. Especially Toro Rosso picked up quite a lot of speed over the winter and they look very strong.
Sauber as well.”
He went on to say, “They were all the teams where I thought we could catch up a bit more but they made quite a big step and we still have to make a big one.”
It will be interesting to see VRT’s performance among the established midfield runners in the Australian Grand Prix that will be held on March 27, 2011 in Melbourne.
