VVS Opens 2012 season on a great note – High School Volleyball
The boys’ volleyball team of Vernon Verona Sherrill High School opened the 2012 with 10-0 record at the New Year Tournament.
The tournament was attended by six teams including VVS. Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s All-Sports Booster Club hosted the tournament. The hosts took full advantage of the opportunity and remained undefeated. Each team appeared in 10 matches and played two matches
against other five teams in the competition. At the end of the campaign following positions were defined for the participants.
Vernon-Verona-Sherrill 10-0 Chittenango Bears 6-4 Sauquoit Valley 6-4 Little Falls 6-4 Cobleskill-Richmondville 2-8 Ilion 0-10
The VVS team, also labelled as Red Devils, played with a complete new set of players. The team had only two players from 2010, while rest of the team was composed with new players. However, the team displayed spectacular performance and VVS maintained its
dominance on the centre court.
Red Devils kicked off the action with 4-0 record, where they scored two wins apiece over Sauquoit Valley and C-R. Alex Rose and Jarett Durant of VVS formed a great combo and staged an eye-catching action on the net. They remained remarkably consistent in
all the matches and led the Devil to success.
In the third leg of the tournament, VVS faced off tough rival Chittenango, who started the day with consecutive wins and then crossed paths with the Red Devils of Vernon Verona Sherrill High School. The first match between VVS and Chittenango was full of
thrilling moments.
Both teams played displayed incredible action of volleyball and frequently traded leads. The Bears put up great resistance and gave a good competition to the Red Devils. Nonetheless, the host team managed to overcome their resilient rivals and claimed another
victory in the tournament. Durant and Rose once again received huge applause from the fans for their excellent work.
The Red Devils played two matches against Bears and pulled off success in both matches. The Chittenango hitters created enough trouble for VVS defence but the final victory came to Red Devils.
After losing to VVS in two matches, the Head Coach of Chittenango Rob Smith said, “I have a lot of first-year players who have stepped up today. I’m very impressed with the way they’re handling it. I think we’ve surpassed what I’ve expected...but as soon
as they surpass what you expect, your expectations go even higher.”
Later in the day, the Red Devils took on the other two teams of the tournament. They launched authority over Cobleskill-Richmondville (C-R) and the Lions. Nothing could stop VVS from capturing the top slot in standings. They finished the day with 10-0 record,
while Alex Rose settled for the award of Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament.
VVS mentor Jim Burton expressed much delight about the wonderful performance of his team, which mostly featured new players. The coach encouraged the players to continue with success during the rest of the season.
