  1. Most certified pre-owned cars do come with a dealer warranty... they're good as new, just broken in a little.  They're usually a good buy on a great car.

  2.   It is a warranty issued by VW of America, not a dealership warranty per se; in other words, VW stands behind the warranty, not a dealership.

The warranty comes with roadside assistance from Cross Country Motor club, though I have to say that they aren't always very fast at responding to calls (based upon past customer's experience), a subscription to VW magazine for owner's, some limited discounts from time to time from VW (usually for service or parts specials), and is fairly comprehensive, covering the vehicle for 24 months or 24,000 miles from the date of purchase.  The CPO warranty is in addition to the remaining factory warranty (if any), so your total length of warranty for some items can be longer than 24 months or 24,000 miles (i.e., powertrain items etc..).   Wear and tear items, item such as, but not limited to battery, tires, brake pads and clutch linings, wiper blades, fan belts, most rubber parts, appearance items (paint, trim, especially interior trim like seat covers, carpet, wood, etc..).  The vehicle is supposed to have all recalls done, certain items inspected and replaced (worn wiper blades, tires below a certain depth of tread, etc.), supposed to come with all original accessories: i.e., owner's manual, ALL KEYS/REMOTES!!!, a spare tire, jack, etc...

In addition, it cannot be more than 5 model years old from the current model year available and must have less than 75,000 total miles to qualify.  It will come with a car fax report and if the dealership has any service records on the vehicle (they might not, depending on where the vehicle came from), they must provide those records as well.  Oh, and the warranty has no deductable and can be transfered ONE time to a new buyer for a fee.

A lot depends upon who did the inspection: some vehicles that are lease returns are inspected by VW and certified by them before auction to the dealerships, others are inspected by the dealerships.  I would suggest that you have any used car, certified or not, inspected by an independent source before purchase.   In the area I was in, some dealers did a terrible job of inspection, while some did an outstanding job, but I've seen this with other cars as well, not just VW.

A Certified car does mean you'll pay more for it, but it does have some peace of mind, as you can deal with VW over issues with the car, not just the dealership.

Hope this helps, a car nut.
