Issue with timing belt, and water pump(bearing) seizing in which order I dont know, and the dealer is telling me that is not going to be coeverd by the 5yr/60k miles Powertrain if the damage is cause by the timing belt. Any input??? also is it true that if my water pump siezed as in the bearing went bad it would not damage my t-belt (statement from the dealer)?

Thank you.

  1. Depneding on engine, there are those where the timing also drives the water-pump.Doesn't sound to be so with your explanation. But,if driven by the timing belt, seized bearings will definately case timing belt damage or breakage. If external to the timing belt cover(and not  driven by the said belt)then'NO!',water-pump did not cause the damage. You gave no info as-to year and model, there is a lot f differances there.(407)484-1820.Forty years a mechanic and shop owner.

  2. Replacement of the timing belt as a general maintenance item is not usually covered with cars that have longer warranties, but 60,000 miles is a standard interval for recommended replacement.

The timing belt is part of your engine, your engine is part of the drive train.  If you are within your warranty period there is no doubt this should be covered under warranty.  I would read the warranty but even if there is an exclusion if they didn't tell you about that specifically when buying the car I would consider that false advertising.  A powertrain warranty covers the engine, transmission, driveshaft, cv joints, axles and probably wheels.  If you can't drive your car, your drivetrain is having a problem and them fixing it was part of the deal of you buying the car.  If they won't honor thier warranty, get a lawyer.

  4. the timing belt is maintinance so it may not be covered.
