The beam has been sitting out in the weather. Wheels froze up also. What steps should I take to rebuild these. Im trying to replace the bent beam on a 74 bug. Someone said to force air into the brake line. But I can't see how this would force the calipers open. I appreciate your help!! repair manuals havn't adressed this problem.

  1. ok pry  brake pad with a screwdriver and break loose the brake bleeder while prying should push back the piston inside Calipers enough tto get it off and to replace and sometime it wil even brake loose and work ... this site can help you out with it all .. like type  how to change brake pad.. how to change brake rotor how to bleed brakes you can even find a video sometimes that wil help out.. most all cars are the same in how the brake work so knowing one is knowing all.. nuts and bolts change but how they work in all the same air wil not force them back so much but out you wil need more than air you can find your answers to help here

  2. your classic beetle should have drums.

if converted to discs, just go get another set.

did someone REALLY suggest you lubricate your BRAKES????

try brake cleaner, maybe, but for a really good answer, try www.thesamba.com

the locals there will treat you nice, and offer solid advice.

  3. First, spray them with a lubricant to help loosen the parts.  Use two channel locks one each pad, putting pressure on them against the caliper frame.  You should be able to relax the piston with minimal amount of pressure.

The best tool for the job is reverse action pliers.  They open as you squeeze.

Yes, Michael, I did say lubricate the brakes to free them.  I have done this on a couple of VW's in the past.  Once back together, you use brake cleaner to remove the residual lubricant.

  4. if you're going to rebuild them, buy new discs and pads, and wail on the old ones with a mallet to break them loose...
