What's your favorite year (classic) bug, and why? I like the body and style of the early 70's myself.

I have owned a 1974, 1969, 1967, and a 1964, which is the current one I own. I have loved them all, however the 64 I currently own is my favorite year. Reason being is it still has the charm and it is the last year before any major changes (while some do consider the rear window being changed in 53, then again in 58 a major change, I am referring to the changes as follows between the 64 and 65 year:

1965 (1 Aug 64 to 31 July 65)

Master and wheel cylinders redesigned.

New cooling air control with flaps under fan (formerly annular ring inside fan). Improved heater. Lever type heater controls.

Slightly curved ‘flat' windscreen, and slightly bigger. Slimmer door posts and windscreen posts. Window vent has lock moved to bottom.

More powerful wiper motor, and longer blades. Thinner, more contoured front seats (increased rear leg room). Rear seat folds flat.

Engine lid catch now push-button. Swiveling sun visors.)

So as you can see, MAJOR changes occurred with the  start of the 1965 year. Sorry for the long answer but you asked why lol

i prefer a 71 super, personally, mostly because that is what i have.

i also like the macpherson strut front end and the flat windshield (flat windshields were 71-72 only.

also, the fact that mine was one of the first couple thousand built is sorta cool.

I liked the 73 Superbeetles, mostly cuz there's a dashboard you can put a coffee on!  I had a 72 super, and it was nice with the macpherson strut system and more spacious trunk, but the flat dash was boring.

From an asthetic perspective, pre 65 bugs have warmer, more rounded body lines and smaller windows.  The 70s vintage had a harder-edge look.

mos VW entheusists perfer the old style bugs up to 67 but personally i like the late model mexican bugs from the 80s to 03 mstly because the body colored bumpers with turn signals in the bumpers
