Question:

VW problems, Please Help!?

I am having a lot of trouble with my '72 VW beetle. I can start it up and it will idle, but when I give it gas or put it in gear, it dies. It's timed 5 degrees after dead top center. The few times I've been able to get it going, it has no problem accelerating. But when I come to a stop sign, it dies. The carberator is a 34 PICT 3. I've tried adjusting it, but to no avail. Suggestions? Comments? I need help!, getting to my wits end with this!!

  2. Fuel filter?  Fuel pump?  Accelerator cable?

  3. How fast is your idle speed? It should be between 800 and 900rpm. Make sure both sides of the vacuum advance are working. Pull off the back side hose and plug it. the timing should be around 7.5 before TDC.  Next check the front vacuum advance. I just suck on the hose while the engine is running and listen to it get faster. Did this engine get any of the bogus emissions  c**p from calif? If so remove the plate under the carb and the crossover tap-plug it and throw that stuff away.

Next is the rubber boots in the intake manifold. spray som oil on them when the engine is running and see if there are any vacum leaks.

Last is grab the carb and see if it will wiggle. They only had 2 nuts to hold them down and tended to work them selfs loose.

Good luck hope it is something minor.
