Hi,
I've just had VW dealership replace 4 tires on a 2004 Touareg. They forwarned me that because of VW design, they might have to replace sensors after changing tires because they sometimes break while taking tires off rims. They also noticed valve stems were uncapped and corroded, which they surmise probably led to further corrosion in all 4 tire sensors. They then claimed they had to drill out all 4 tire sensors to replace wheels AND needed to replace those too (at $225 each plus labor). After test drive, they still can't get the system to stop reporting tire problems (even after 10 miles).
Does changing a tire really that adversely affect a tire sensor even when done by the "Pros"?
Is it suspicious to not have valve stem caps?
Is it odd for both the stems and tire sensors to be so corroded that both have to be replaced?
