Question:

Vacation Choice in Puerto Rico?

Looking for a good family vacation spot in PR, two families with a total of 4 teenage boys.

Looking for a place on on near a nice beach, preferably with a couple of beach choices not too far away, and not too far from a reasonable sized city for shopping and restaurants, could be San Juan or one of the other larger cities.

Price conscious, but would rather not go than go to a dump.

I would love to get a few suggestions. Even if someone has already suggested a place you would like to suggest, please answer, so that I can see if there is a place that a lot of people like.

If it matters, half of us speak Spanish.

Thanks .....

  1. The most important consideration is availability for March, as most  nice hotels and condos are booked.

You could use the web site epinions.com for reviews on accommodations.

Perhaps try craigslist.com for PR vacation rentals.

  2. Better you should go to The Majestic in the Dominican Republic. PR is just another extension of the US. In DR, the "Yankee" dollar STILL goes along way. Nothing like service from people who need your tips ( even though you don't have to tip cuz it's all inclusive ) to care for you. PR isn't like that as much. Oh...don't get me wrong, it's a GREAT place to travel BUT DR is just that better. Also you may wanna try Mexico. GREAT GREAT. Enjoy.

  3. OK, can I ask you first of all what type of activities do you guys like?? Because PR has so many nice areas to stay in & so much to do, it can help narrow it down. Also if its 2 families, would you need 2 or more hotel rooms? You can try looking for vacation rentals, you can get an apt or small house maybe.

Also I like the Embassy suites in Dorado. Its only a half hour drive from San Juan, so you can still easily go & enjoy the city. But this is a quiet, nice town on the North coast. The hotel has a private beach, world class golf course, pool & poolside bar/grill & a lounge w/ live salsa bands on weekends. For about $200 per night you can get a suite w/ bedrooms (king or 2 queen) & a living room with a pullout couch bed. & they have bigger suites for more $. This is pretty close to Camuy Caves & Arecibo Telescope also.

Also if you want to be close to El Yunque rain forest then stay 45 minutes outside San Juan in Fajardo, there is great fishing, snorkelling & boating here too.  & there is a bioluminescent lagoon called Las Croabas laggon here too. You kayak out & see the water glow in the dark. Or stay in Rio Grande (actually where the rain forest is). Luquillo beach & seven seas beach are nice beaches close by these areas. You can even take a ferry to Vieques or Culebra Islands where the sand is powder white.

Rincon on the west coast is known for great surfing & beautiful sunsets. & in March, you might be lucky enough to still get in some whalewatching..  If you want to be in the quiet mountains then try Utuado in the central area. Ponce in the south is a cool city too. There are museums & great architecture & its close to a Dry forest with cactus.  & anywhere you go in PR, you will find watersports & activities. Also you can stay in San Juan, but you will pay more $. But you wil lbe close to shopping, nightlife, tourist attractions & transportat.ion. Don't miss Old San Juan & El Morro fortress. ENJOY!

  4. go to www.puertorico.com and search for a nice beach parador in the north west , west or south west part of the island * do not stay in San Juan it is target for tourist with lots of money to spend * the dollar will go a long way of you stay off the beaten path. Also the beaches it self are way better in the west and south cause it is the Caribbean Sea , warm and clear all year long * on the north you have the Atlantic Ocean which is murky and cold all year long. I am sure that you guys will find a nice spot around the island and some great hospitality that will show as the islanders do...

*** look for the following areas -

    Aguadilla * Dorado * San Sebastian * Guanica *

La Parguera * Isabela * Cabo Rojo * Lajas * Caña Gorda

    Boqueron * Ballenas

  5. goto www.puertorico.com there you will find everything you need , if you are arrivng at san juan , stay at the intercontinental hotel very nice ,nice poriced and you many beaches to go to in the same area, very nice . mall, everything you need you will have . try booking a trip to El Yunque, and on to Las cavernas de Camuy you will love this places and tehy will take you from the hotel no need to drive . if you need more just ask me i lived there 18 years.
