  1. I live in Cairns north Queensland & you would never see me in Melbourne during the winter months its bloody cold & it gets below freezing point, just north of melbourne you have the alpine region which snows & is very popular, head west & the cold eats you from the inside of your bones, it rains alot too

  2. Hi,

First of all the weather in June's quite cool (average temperature between 12-17C). Having said that, if it's sunny, it can get quite warm. The trick is dress like an onion (so you can take your layer off if it gets too warm).

Things you can do in Melbourne:

    - St Kilda Beach (lots of nice restaurants and bars) and also go for a stroll to the pier to get a night few of Melbourne city from the bay (catch tram number 16 from swanston street)

    - Markets -> go to visit Sunday arts and crafts market along St Kilda Beach or in front of the victoria arts centre, southbank which is located opposite of Flinders Street Station

    - Dockland -> you can walk from the end of Collins St (at Southern Cross train station) all the way to Telstra Dome then to Dockland (a nice stroll near the water) and also lots of cafes, bars and restaurants

-Federation Square (you can walk from Federation Square with lots of cafes, restaurants and bars) passing Flinders St Station (nice few at night) and passing Southbank are (again lots of choices of restaurants/bars) all the way to Crown Casino

    - Crown Casino -> lots of nice restaurants and bars (Rockpool, Nobu, Waterfront, Automatic), cinemas, some shops open late as well as of course the Casinos :)

    - Eureka Tower, located opposite flinders st station in the Southbank centre - in between Federation Square and Crown Casino (you can climb up the highest building in Melbourne with the glass floor to get a few of Melbourne City)

    - Alternatively -> head to Rialto Tower for another high point of observation and they open till late (8pmish)

    - Walk along st kilda road passing the Victorian Arts centre from Flinders St station to ROYAL BOTANIC GARDEN (approx 15 mins walk)

    - Go have a drink on top of Sofitel Hotel Melbourne, you'll get wonderful view of MCG and Melbourne City

    - Go to Flinders Lane, Little Collins St and Collins st little alley for hidden bars and restaurants

    - Go feast on chinese at Melbourne Chinatown (located in Little Bourke St)

    - Go feast on Italian food and gelati at our famous Lygon St (you catch tram number 1 or 8 towards Melbourne University) or walk it :). Other than Italian restaurants and gelati strips, there're some shops open late and there's an independent cinema called Nova

    - Go a bit further out of Melbourne to the famous st of Brunswick st (and check out whetehr there's any Gigs you'd like to see). Brunswick st is full of eateris and nice bars (very alternative)

    - Into Jazz, why not go to Bennetts lane

    - Shopping at Melbourne Central (Corner swanston st and la trobe st), QV mall (corner swanston st and lonsdale st), bourke st mall (corner bourke st and swanston st), GPO mall (corner bourke st and elizabeth st), Designers such as louis vuitton, bally, gucci, channel  (along collins st, starting from corner collins st and swanston st). Factory outlet shopping at DFO (in southern cross station or used to be known as spencer st station, located in the corner of spencer st and collins st).

You can also shop in the famous chapel st (you can catch a tram towards toorak or south yarra from swanston st)

    - Go to MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground Tour), catch a train to Jolimont station from flinders street station (Line Epping/Hurstbridge). Try also if you can to watch AFL (Australian Football Rule) at Telstra Dome Stadium or MCG.

    - Go to Victoria Market (catch a tram along elizabeth st), it's Melbourne market selling fresh food, clothes and souvenirs. Love the spanish donuts there :-)

    - Melbourne Zoo (catch a tram from Elizabeth St or Williams st), Melbourne Zoo is voted to be one of the best in the world.

    - If the weather's pouring raining (sometimes around June it can be), do outdoor activities such as - head to Melbourne Museum togehter with IMAX in Carlton (you can catch a tram/walk from the city if you're keen or drive), Melbourne Arts centre (next to flinders st station), watch cinema/movies at Hoyts (try the bean bags seat) in Melbourne central shopping centre (located in the corner of Swanston st and la trobe st)

-Head to Albert Park sports centre, where you can swim in the commonwealth game swimming pool or practise your golf swing :). Walk around the lake, cook your own BBQ or go to one of the lake side cafes :)!

If you have a car (you can also join one of those greyhound bus day trip):

    1. Great Ocean Road

In here you'll see the rock formation of 12 apostles and is just a really nice road with nice scenery to drive. You'l also be passing the famous Surfing beach of Torquay/bells beach and you might want to stock up on some surfing brand clothing such as Quick Silver/Roxy

    2. Head to the zoo other than Melbourne Zoo, there're quite a few (www.zoo.org.au)

    - Head to Weribee Open Range Zoo (Safari style zoo) together with the famous historial Weribee Mansion

    - GO to Healesville sanctuary where you can see platypus and pat kangaroos :)

    3. Drive to Dandenong Ranges - have lunch there and go for a walk in the forest or take the steam train of puffing billy

    4. Drive to Scienceworks museum at spotswood (approx 20 mins drive from melbourne cbd)

    5. Try your luck finding gold, drive to Ballarat (approx 1.5 hrs drive from princess highway west of melbourne). You can visit the historical town of Ballarat

    6. Need a relaxation? Why not head to Melbourne Spa and natural spring town of Daylesford (approx 1.5 hrs drive west of melbourne) and have a nice lunch at the Lake House restaurant followed by a massage in many of the spa center and a dip at Daylesford spring water pool.

    7. Keen to hike - head to Wilson Promontory (a popular camping ground for melbournian)

    9. Would like to stay longer than 1 day for a weekend? Why not visit the famous Grampians National Park and do hiking and get on top of the hills.

    10. More Shopping? A bit out of Melbourne is to drive to Chadstone shopping centre (follow St Kilda Rd towards Caulfield approx 40 mins drive) - it's the biggest shopping centre (pretty much acres) south east of Melbourne

    11. You can drive either to and from Geelong to Sorrento (catch a ferry). Bay suburbs such as Queensclif, sorrento, rye is very nice.

    12. Try to drive to Penguin island and experience Penguin Parade - you can see little penguins walking home at night. There's also a koala conservation, phillip island winery.

    13. If the snow is good in the mountain, you can ski at Mt Hotham, Mt Buller, Falls Creek or do cross country skiing at Lake Mountain.

For any events for the month and things to do, check out Melbourne City official website. It also has attractions, restaurants, etc

    Have fun mate :-)!

  3. Depends what you think cold is, I doubt you'll need thick clothing though.

Melbourne in winter averages 14°C (57°F)

  4. Melbourne has a very vibrant nightlife. There are countless bars, clubs and lounges scattered (and often well hidden) in the city. Be sure to walk down alley ways in the CBD (don't worry it's safe) because that's where most of the best places are.

Lygon Street has some great dining, and is a 2 minute cab ride from the city.

Brunswick Street has some decent bars, and some cool jazz clubs etc.

Chapel Street has great shopping, but also a lot of idiots who have to show everyone their awesome car. Beware of the muzzas.

It does get quite cool in Melbourne, but it's also very hot. It's notorious for it's crazy temperature swings. Bring some very warm clothing, but have some summer clothing packed. Don't be surprised when it will be 35 degrees, 12 degrees, rain, thunder, lightning and sunny in the span of eight hours.

    Enjoy your stay

  5. Take a jumper, a jacket and an umbrella.  Melbourne is fun.
