Vacation to Puget Sound Washington?

My husband and I want to take a trip to WA. We were thinking Mid Sept. Is that a good time to go?? Also I want to spend a couple days in Seattle and then would like to go to San Juan Island. Is that too far or can you take a ferry there? I want to go whale watching, do some fishing and just relax. Is that a resonable thing to do or are there other places in Puget Sound to do that? We want to enjoy the beautiful scenery too.

  1. September is a good time to go and a couple days is perfect for Seattle.

To get to the San Juan's you will need to drive to the ferry dock in Anacortes. It's about 80 miles (take I5 North to Highway 20, head west and follow the signs).

On San Juan Island, there are fishing charters from Friday Harbor plus there is a lake (Sportsman Lake) for trout. Most recently I stayed at Snug Harbor Resort. They have some cute cabins right on the water. They rent kayaks and boats there. We saw sea otters and heard a lot of whales. Some guys came from the beach just west of their had a couple buckets of oysters. It's a beautiful place.

  2. September is an amazing time to come to Seattle. Expect a little rain, maybe some cloudy days, possibly some sunshine. Do dress warm. Check out island adventures for whale watching tours. Check out the Washington State Ferry website for the times to go to the San Juan's. If you make it out to the islands I would plan on renting a car and driving around San Juan through Friday Harbor. Check out Roche Harbor...it's on the opposite side of the island from Friday Harbor. I would recommend staying outside of Seattle...less expensive than staying directly downtown. Check out the Embassy Suites in Lynnwood. It's 12 miles north of Seattle. You get a full breakfast and drinks every night and it's all included in your rate. Check out Redhook brewery, Colombia Winery, and Chateau St. Michelle. Check out the Spirit of Washington dinner train. If you are looking for things to do downtown I would recommend the Underground Tour. It shows a lot of seattle's history from the 1800's to early 1900's. Pike's Place is always a must as is the Space Needle. Bainbridge Island and Bremerton are always nice day trips. It's also not very far from the Canadian Border. Bring a passport and head up there for a day or two. There's also Mt. Baker, Mt. Rainier, and St. Helens which are nice day trips. Leavenworth is a quaint little bavarian village. There's lots to do in this area. Good Luck!

  3. check out this link for the best experience for whale watching. All the info on transportation and fares are on it. You can also google "what to do in seattle" and it will show you even more

    have fun...

  4. i Live in seattle and its a beautiful city! The best time to visit is in the summer but september in good as well! The worst time to visit is in november through about january or febuary because this is the rainy season however seattle can also be very beautiful and mystical in the rain! And no the San Juan Islands are not far from seattle at all! And they do have whale watching tours, your best bet is to go down to seattles dock and there will be a a place you can ask about ferrys and tours (right by the aquarium). Other tips of things to do in seattle is to visit seattles LIbrary i kno that sounds boring but you will see what I mean! It was reently voted the worlds most amazingly building in the last decade! Another tip is to go to Seattle's sculpture park! If you like scenery there are several hikes around seattle that are absolutly beautiful!

  5. Going whale watching is pretty much an all-day activity - plan to leave kind of early and catch a ferry to the islands. However, the ferry dock is about 2 hours north of Seattle (give or take 1/2 hour). Here's the map:

Here's the WA state ferry website:

Mid-September is a nice time - the leaves will be starting to change colors. I'd recommend you dress moderately warm, temperatures can drop around 50-60ish. Good chance of rain, too, so be aware of that.

  6. yes you rent a car from seattle and travel NORTH to anacortes, Wa.

there you catch your ferry to SanJuan Island to relax and go whale watching. (I hope you are successful in seeing the whales)  In Seattle , i would see Pike Place market, seattle waterfront, space needle, and possibly a trip up a ways north to see "snoqualmie falls"

    have a great time.
