I just bought a 6 year old TB, and he is needing his shots. He is my first horse. I also need to get his coggins done. Around how much does this cost? i think i am getting a 4-way and possibly rabies.

  1. call a vet. did you not get a negative coggins at purchase?

  2. just call and ask your vet

  3. I'd call a vet and ask.  It's different in different parts of the country.  Here, in the southwest, the full 6-way vaccs with rabies and a coggins test would run about $100 or maybe a bit more.

  4. Call the vet who is going to be caring for your horse and ask what shots the animal needs, as this can vary widely from state to state and region to region. You also need to find out what shots you are and are not allowed to give yourself. Some states, like Georgia, have laws which prohibit lay people from giving certain kinds of vaccines to horses, such as rabies. The vet should be able to answer questions like this, and provide information about costs and whether or not you can do this yourself.

As for the Coggins test, that must be done by the vet, and it needs to be done BEFORE the horse gets on the van to be shipped to you. Most states require that horses which are transported across state lines have a negative Coggins and a health certificate from licensed vet in their place of origin, so you need to have this done as soon as possible. Also, it takes at least 24 to 48 hours to get the results back from the lab, once the blood sample is submitted, so you need to plan for this in your shipping schedule. I had my mare Coggins tested earlier this year, because I plan to show her this summer, and it only cost me about $30, but your vet may be different than mine is.

One other note about shots: make sure that one of the shots your new horse gets is for Strangles- because that is one of the most common diseases which horses get when they are shipped long distances. Being on a van for long periods of time, eating strange food, and drinking strange water all take their toll, and they tend to lower the horses' resistance to this particular bug.  Vaccination may not entirely prevent infection-no vaccine is 100% foolproof- but it will lessen the severity considerably, which is what makes it worth it.

Good luck to you, and congratulations on your new horse. I hope this helps.

  5. For a whole set of shots, boosters included- this will cost you roughly $200-225 for a vet to administer. As for a coggins, they can run you from $15-45, depending on where you get them done.

  6. Depends!

Depends what is in your 4-way.

Also depends on where you live.  Some areas have a bigger problem with certian diseases.   Depends on if your horse leaves the property or not.

For my area of maryland we do:

    rabies

botulism (especially if they're fed roundbales)

    WEE/EEE

    West Nile (WNV)

I do not do Strangles or flu/rhino.

The cost varies so much depending on which vet you use.   It's also helpful to know which shots he already had.   If he's never had Botulism before, for example, he will need boosters.    What did he get last time around?

For me it's $30 for Coggins, $40 for farm call fee, $49 for health exam (good idea for a new horse!), and then about $75 in vaccinations.   If he's behind on care, you'll also want his teeth checked.   Overall I budget about $200-250 for incoming horse plus I get the farrier in right way to start hoof care.

  7. Best way to find out the cost is to call the Equine Vet you want to come to your stable and ask what the cost is.

Usually, the Equine Vet has a charge for just driving out to the stable.  That charge in my area is $40.

  8. RABIES:  $12

    COGGINS $25 -once a year

    EWT: $12

    4 WAY: $25

    WEST NILE:  $20

    RHINO: $20

    STRANGLES $20

BARN CALL $50 (vet is close so trucking them over is cheaper for me)

those are some prices that my ex-vet charged (minus the 4-way...he did only EWT)

I'm in NC and they suggest vaccinations 2x yearly

When I was in NH it was once a year.

A lot of people do strangles if they show...same with Rhino

I do my own shots now except Rabies and Coggins

edit:  Mine get EWT- Rabies-West Nile-Coggins

Hopefully you got a certificate of a Negative Coggins from the previous owners!  Ask them for vet info!
