Question:

Vacuum sealed chicken - deadly or not?

I opened up chicken that was in a vacuum seal and the smell was overpowering. Not quite rancid, but like really strong chicken. Thing is, it's been in my fridge in the meat bin for 5 days or so. I really wouldn't want to throw it out since I just put all that effort into preparing them...

  1. Better safe than sorry. Get rid of it.

  2. throw it out.  Even vacuum sealed air can get in and rot it.  It's starting to go.  Chicken should not have a strong smell.  yes it should smell like chicken but not over power you.  Don't take the chance.

  3. The only way to know is to wash it with lemon juice or vinegar and see if the smell goes away.

It may still be good.( get rid of the innards if they're in a bag inside the chicken, they start to smell 1st and smell the worst).

I smell strong chickens all the time that are fine and quite safe.

Some people actually believe that a smelly chicken developed Salmonella.

That's false. A chicken either has it when you buy it or it doesn't. In any event salmonella is destroyed by cooking the chicken to an internal temp of 165 to 170F.

So if the chicken didn't smell the day you bought it then it means it's probably still good.

I don't know the whole scenario to give you a better answer except that I've eaten some pretty bad smelling chickens in my days.

    Deadly?( I just saw that).

    No it's not deadly.

I would have been dead centuries ago.
