Question:

Vacuuming at a restaurant...?

I work as a waitress, and I work dayshift. It is part of our job to vacuum before we leave. We use a central vacuum. So it is quiet.

Some people get ticked off when we vacuum. Why? It's quiet. Would they rather look at a dirty floor rather than a clean one?

We try to do it when the lest amount of people are there. But sometimes, it is impossilble to vacuum without customers being there.

So does it bother you? Would you rather see a dirty floor than a clean one?

Maybe this is a heads-up for the ones that do complain! Thanks!

  1. its the dirt that's flying around when you vacuum ....  dusted food yum!

  2. As a long time waitress and someone who frequently dines out, I would have to say it is bothersome to see somebody vacuuming while you are eating.  I don't know what kind of restaurant you work at, but for me, dining out is an experience and a time to "get away" from it all.  It kind of messes up the experience if you've got someone vacuuming next to you.  It ranks right up there with waitress leaning over you to remove the condiments from your table to refill them while you're in the middle of a meal.  : )

  3. Vacuuming should be done after the restaurant closes for night.  I for one would be irritated if you were vacuuming around me while I was eating.

Why doesn't your boss get one of those manual dust picker-uppers things like hotels use in their lobbies?  Using one of those is a very unobtrusive way to clean carpets between vacuuming.

  4. i'm not sure i'd want you to vacuum while i am eating and certainly not if its a minimun family restaurant. i am allergic to dust which vacuums stir up.also it looks as if you are trying to hurry folks out.  if its near closing and you are not close to customers...like another room , go ahead.

  5. Yes that is kind of aggravating i dont like that either. Especially when i am eating. I would suggest a push vacuum

like i swivel vacuum or bissel or just use a broom if you can I would think this would be more appropriate. Another hint is try cleaning up as people leave so you dont bother people.

  6. I am also a waitress, and we always have the person who works the day shift arrive a hour early to get all of those things done before we open.  I myself would also have a problem with someone vacuuming around me when I am out to eat.

  7. is your boss stupid????  No offense, but I didn't go out to eat to watch you do your housekeeping.  Clean the floor when the restaurant is closed, or section off parts of the restaurant and clean when I am not in them.

Vacumn around me and your tip is ten cents

  8. i wouldn't like it, it would be better if the vacuuming was left till everyone is gone or before people arrive.

  9. It's kind of rude when customers are in the restaurant. Especially if it is right before closing.  That telling me you want me out as ASAP.  Try sweeping when there are customers. In the restaurant.  As for the reason they looked ticked off...don't worry about that.  Just keepp in mind hat they pay to eat there and won't come back if they don't like their experience.

  10. As a waitress, I also have to clean before I leave. However, I work the close shift. We do not use a vacuum, we use small brooms and dustpans, the kind with the long handle on them. I have had customers complain about sweeping my area. I do try to sweep away from eating customers in short strokes, directly into the dustpan. I keep my back toward the customers and never sweep around their tables, just the others in my section. Most people don't complain but there is always that one person that will b**** about it.

As a customer, I would rather you clean the area around me then me have to look at food, napkins, crumbs and trash on the floor around me while I am eating. I tend to look for a clean section to sit in. I am paying to eat out and I don't want to sit in the middle of a mess.

As for the people that feel like you are trying to rush them out so you can leave......

    think about this......

at the end of YOUR shift do YOU want to be stuck at work for an extra 40 minutes or do YOU want to leave?

If you come in 2 minutes before closing time.....Be sure I am trying to rush you out. I want to go home to my kids who have been in school all day and whom I've only seen for 10 minutes before I had to come into work to wait tables so YOU can eat out with YOUR family! Believe it or not....I HAVE A LIFE TOO!!!
