Vail Resorts purchases Kirkwood Mountain Resort for 18 million dollars
In a press release on Wednesday, February 22, Vail Resorts revealed its purchase of California’s Kirkwood Mountain Resort for roughly USD $18 million.
The deal between the new and previous owner of the resort located at Lake Tahoe is expected to be inked within a month’s time.
With its acquisition of Kirkwood Mountain Resort, Vail Resorts now has ownership of three resorts in the Lake Tahoe area of California, namely Heavenly Ski Resort and Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort.
The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Vail Resorts Rob Katz stated during the press release on Wednesday morning that, “We are thrilled to welcome Kirkwood into our family as our seventh world-class mountain resort. Kirkwood offers some of the most
extraordinary ski terrain found anywhere in North America with high alpine trails and the most annual average snowfall in Lake Tahoe. Kirkwood represents skiing and riding at its purest, something we intend to retain and protect long into the future.”
Looking to enrich the experience of snow enthusiasts, the gates of Kirkwood Mountain Resort has been opened up for the Vail Resort pass holders, while the Kirkwood pass holders will be able to explore Heavenly Ski Resort and Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort for
the remainder of the season.
“When combined with Heavenly and Northstar, we will be able to offer our guests and pass holders unparalleled value with the very best that Lake Tahoe has to offer,” Katz stated.
The natural ski asserts of Kirkwood Mountain Resort makes it one of the best destinations in Lake Tahoe region for alpine skiers and other snow lovers during the winter season. The steep slope and heavy deposit of snow, terrain parks and Boarder X Course
are some of the prominent features of the resort.
The co-president of Vail Resorts Blaise T. Carrig conceded that they were only going to make changes or upgrades at the resort after discussing it with the guests and employees in order to get a better idea of what improvements, if any, are required. He
explained that it did not make any sense in acquiring Kirkwood for its unique attributes and immediately changing them.
Vail Resorts hopes that the current employees at Kirkwood Mountain Resort will keep providing their services under the new owners of the resort.
