I need the computer mainly for work; multi-tasking between web pages and other programs. The difference in specs between the two is not much- Vaio 400gb hard drive- HP 320 gb hard drive.

  1. I would go with the hp because first off your probably not going to use more than 100gb and with hp you get more bang for your buck I have two Hp's and they work great. I would also recommend the hp dv5 its pretty slick

  2. vaios are better than hps

  3. I have the Vaio FW and love it - but if you get it get the 320 GB with the Vaio.  Why?  Because the 400GB is a slower speed, and you want a faster speed or else your computer just isn't going to run as fast.  The 320GB is 5400 RPM which is a good speed - and it isn't worth the extra 100 or 200 dollars (I looked at this option to) to have a slower hard drive that is only 80 GB bigger - not a huge difference.

I would suggest the Vaio FW - I'm in love with it.  I currently have about 180 GB left (about 20 GB music, 7 GB of photos, a couple GB for programs - including 2 3D modeling programs, and about 10GB for Warhammer Online, plus other stuff) and am not worried about not having enough room.

With the VAIO I run Photoshop CS3, Firefox, and Flickr uploadr fine.  I haven't really ran Photoshop and Illustrator intensively at once - but I am sure it would work fine.  It is pretty fast too  - it boots up in under a minute.  I got the 4 GB of RAM.

I looked at HPs too - I liked the dv5 and the little tablet.  I even had an employee discount.  I chose the Vaio for a few reasons, and here is why.

It was about the same price and the screen is to die for.  I love the widescreen - it's great.  I also have a SonyStyle store so I can drop off the computer if it breaks.  Also, Sony is trying to up their customer service experience by starting stuff like backstage (their version of Apple's genius bar where you can come in and get help).

The FW is also pretty inexpensive for what it is.  The two you are looking at are almost exactly the same price  - you can get the Vaio at 2.8 Ghz though if you want - which is really fast for a laptop.

I also love the feel of the FW - the key board is great.

In design cues, I like the way Sony went with the hinge.

The service plans are about the same.

Really, the computers are most likely going to be similar in speed.  The main difference will be case, screen size, and other small what nots.  I'm suggesting the Vaio FW because I personally love it and would recommend it to anyone.  It runs my games and modeling programs beautifully - and everything looks sharp and well defined.  The screen isn't blurry or discolored and is well lit.

I hope that helps you - just also keep in mind what you love!
