Vakifbank TTelekom ISTANBUL sweeps 2004 Tomis CONSTANTA in Pool D – 2012 CEV Chapmionship
A Pool D match of the 2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League- Women recently took place in the Romanian city of Constanta.
The two teams that contested with each other were the home team of 2004 Tomis CONSTANTA as well as Vakifbank TTelekom ISTANBUL of Turkey. The match between the two sides did not take long to reach its close as the host team was handed out a defeat by the
guests in a clean sweep.
By the time that the Vakifbank squad was celebrating their win and the Tomis were trying to swallow their fifth loss of pool play in the tournament, the scoreboard read as 18-25, 19-25, 23-25.
The captain of the losing team Claudia Gavrilescu said, “We always go for the maximum goal regardless if we are playing in Europe’s top competition or with the team which is being ranked last in our national league. Our intention was to deliver a good performance
tonight to the delight of our fans and we did not think we were anyway going to lose as the ball is round and anything can happen out there.”
However, the Vakifbank captain Gozde Sonsirma expressed her jubilation in the following manner, “We fought to score a win tonight and also to live up to our reputation being last year’s champions. I think we provided the audience with some good Volleyball
tonight.”
The Vakifbank squad was able to take the lead early on at 8-4 in the opening set of the game and stick with the advantage all the way through until 16-10. The home team tried to overcome the gap but their effort was not strong enough to stop the Turkish
team from their onward march which secured them the frame at 25-18. The second set saw some fight from the Romanians but they could not come up to the mark which gave the Turkish another win at 25-19.
The third set of the match was more competitive but the Vakifbank still had the lead at 8-5 and later on at 16-10. Despite the fact that the home team tried to close in the gap, they could not avoid a win from Turkey at 25-23.
