Vakifbank Ttelekom ISTANBUL beats Tomis CONSTANTA in Pool D of CEV - Volleyball
The 2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League is currently taking place in many of the European countries and the preliminary round of the tournament is underway. One of the Pool D matches saw the Vakifbank Ttelekom ISTANBUL women’s team compete with their Romanian
Tomis CONSTANTA counter parts on December 8th as the Istanbul squad gotg a clean sweep. The match was played in the Turkish capital of Istanbul while the venue of the competition was the Burhan Felek Volleyball Hall. A total of 1,150 spectators
filled the gym to watch the two teams compete.
The match between the two sides did not take long to reach its close as the home team was able to make a clean sweep over CONSTANTA. Not only were the ISTANBUL able to make their home crowd happy by winning the match in three back to back sets, they did
so by completely smothering their opponents. By the time that the match had ended and the ISTANBUL squad had started celebrating their impressive win, the score board showed the following final set scores: 25-20, 25-19 and 25-16.
The coach of the winning team, Giovanni Guidetti, expressed himself in the following words at the press meeting that was held after the match had ended: “We made many silly mistakes but we took the match very easily. We have to prepare carefully for the
next game with Azerrail which is coming up next week.”
On the other hand, the coach of the losing team, Darko Zakoc, shared his views on the match by making the following statements: “I would like to congratulate Vakifbank. We are proud we had the chance to play such a strong team and we are all gaining valuable
experience by playing such strong sides in the Champions League.”
The first set of the match started off with both the teams coming out strong in the beginning but CONSTANTA was able to get itself the lead at 15-12. ISTANBUL did not let their opponents get away with the advantage and got themselves the lead which also
bagged them the match at 25-20. The momentum generated from getting a win in the opening set got the ISTANBUL side the lead early on in the second set at 6-2. Once they had the lead, the Turkish squad kept on marching on at full throttle leaving CONSTANTA
behind till ISTANBUL had another frame at 25-19.
The loss of the first two sets got the morale of the Romanian team down in the dumps and it showed in the half-hearted effort that they put up in the third set. The sluggish performance of the Romanian side made it easier for the Turkish to seal the deal
on the match by winning the third set at 25-16.
