Valencia might replace Barcelona as the Spanish Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Recent reports have revealed that a verbal agreement between the organisers of Valencia and Formula 1 Management chief Bernie Ecclestone recently took place as a result of which, Valencia might replace Barcelona as the new Spanish Grand Prix.
Barcelona became the venue of the Spanish Grand Prix back in 1991 and since then, the venue has held 21 Formula 1 races so far.
This is not the first time that these rumours have been revealed though as it was believed in the beginning of 2010 as well that Circuit de Catalunya might not host the Spanish Grand Prix in 2011.
Nevertheless, this time it has been revealed that a written official agreement on this matter will be released soon which would clarify the reasons and the conditions as a result of this decision.
One has to admit though that Barcelona is much more entertaining venue than Valencia and the fans enjoy it more as well. The Spanish Grand Prix this year was a close competition between Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel at first. However, due to a poor
pit strategy, Alonso lost a lot of ground but Lewis Hamilton still kept chasing Vettel and in the end, finished just a couple of seconds behind the race winner.
In Valencia on the other hand, it was the most boring race of the 2011 Formula 1 season so far with the reigning world champion leading the pack by more than 10 seconds until the end of the race.
Valencia became a part of the sport back in 2008 as the European Grand Prix and the circuit is very well known for testing and its characteristics as it is a street circuit.
However, the track is not wide enough to allow easy overtaking and even though there were two Drag Reduction System zones this past weekend, the race was still not as entertaining as expected.
A confirmation regarding the Spanish Grand Prix switch from Barcelona to Valencia is expected within the next few weeks.
