Valencia willing to annually alternate Spanish Grand Prix with Barcelona beyond 2014 – Formula 1
According to some recent reports, it has been revealed that the Government of Valencia is willing to alternate the Spanish Grand Prix annually with Barcelona beyond 2014 in order to give room to the new venues of the Formula 1 calendar.
Red Bull Racing team’s technical head Adrian Newey believes that this sort of a decision is not going to be good for the sport as permanent tracks like Barcelona should not be removed from the Formula 1 calendar.
“I gather there's a danger that Barcelona could be lost relative to Valencia and I think that would be a tragedy,” he said.
Valencia’s sports minister Dolores Johnson claims that the organisers of the venue and its government are going to follow the contract and hold races until the 2014 Formula 1 season after which they might shift as the Spanish Grand Prix.
Johnson claims that the contract can only be extended if the International Automobile Federation (FIA) is okay with it and if the conditions are ideal for holding a Formula 1 race at Valencia.
Both of these circuits are enjoyed a lot by the fans as the Circuit de Catalunya is one of the most legendary circuits in the Formula 1 calendar while Valencia is a very technical and enjoyable street circuit.
However, these sorts of decisions are required in order to enhance and prosper Formula 1 as new venues like Russia, Africa, Mexico and many others are willing to bring in Formula 1 to their countries.
In 2011, the sport is going to hold a race in India as well which is going to be a very unique venue for the drivers and teams as well keeping in mind that a Formula 1 race has never taken place in that part of the world.
These sorts of venues are increasing the fan following of Formula 1 and keeping in mind that Formula 1 is the most technical motorsport, the officials really need to step up and make things happen.
