Valentina Artemyeva grabs Women’s 50m breast-stroke gold: Day two – 2011 Swimming World Cup, Moscow
Russian breast-stroke veteran, Valentina Artemyeva showed her skills to aquatic crowd by grabbing the title of Women’s 50m breast-stroke on the concluding day of the 2011 Swimming World Cup in Moscow, Russia on Wednesday, October 19.
Moscow is third stage of seven-stop World Cup series scheduled by the international aquatics sport governing body, Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA).
Artemyeva demonstrated her smothering efforts in the short course breast-stroke discipline and overwhelmed frenzy efforts of her challengers to cement her gold finish.
The Russian, who qualified in the final round as fastest swimmer proved her mettle for the fastest spot in the final round. With her commendable swim and authoritative strokes, she dictated terms to her competitors and managed her way to the top of podium.
Her immaculate start played a vital role in her victory, as she gained a considerable lead over her competitors after the initial 15 metres of the swim. With her persist efforts and notable aggression she cruised her way towards the wall and was the first
swimmer to complete her first half of the race.
With her relentless efforts in the second half, she sprinted her way towards the finishing wall to occupy the title of shortest breast-stroke discipline. Artemyeva clocked a time of 30.23 seconds to prove her eligibility for the gold crown. Her time was
just 0.02 seconds slower than her qualification time, but the Russian won gold medal in a comfortable manner.
She was approximately 1.50 seconds away from improving the world record of the event, which is held by USA’s Jessica Hardy for clocking 28.80 seconds in 2009.
The gold medallist was followed by her team-member, Yuliya Efimova, who remained 0.31 seconds slower than her and stepped on the podium for silver medal with a timing of 30.54 seconds. Efimova was trailed by Hye Jin Kim of Korea, who appeared on the finishing
end with an effort of 30.97 seconds for bronze medal.
In addition, the session ended after the completion of all scheduled events while the podium finishers received awards and accolades for their stupendous efforts after completion of the session.
