Valentino Rossi surpasses leading autosports personalities in social interaction – MotoGP News
Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi has surpassed every other leading autosports personality in terms of interaction with his fans on a popular microblogging website Twitter.
Although Rossi had a disappointing 2012 MotoGP season, still there has been no decrease in his fan following. In fact, his fan following in social networks keep on growing across the globe. These days, the number of followers that any public figure has directly relates and is used as a reference for the popularity of that particular person. The equation is quite simple. The more followers you accumulate, the more popular you are.
On Twitter, one of the most famous social networking websites, Rossi now has more followers than his Yamaha teammate, the MotoGP Champion Jorge Lorenzo. The number of his followers on Twitter now exceed 1.5 million and this amount is double than Lorenzo’s followers. It has only been 13 months since Rossi appeared on Twitter and to gain such popularity in such short time is truly remarkable.
Rossi has also gone beyond Fernando Alonso, one of the most famous personalities in Formula 1. Alonso has a total of 1.4 million followers on Twitter. Jenson Button, another famous figure in Formula 1, was also left behind in fan following by Rossi.
The surge in Rossi’s reputation may well be attributed to his decision of returning to Yamaha which was confirmed on August 10, 2012 after he had the worst two years of his racing career with Ducati in 2011 & 2012.
It is a commonly known fact that if a sportsman does not perform well, he loses his popularity. Although Rossi’s case has been an exception so far because his popularity has increased despite his poor performance, but in order to retain it, the seven-time world champion will have to prove a few things in the upcoming MotoGP season which starts on April 7, 2013 in Qatar.
