Valeri Sorokina, Nina Vislova tread into Women’s Doubles semi-finals – US Open Update
Russia’s prime Women’s Doubles team Valeri Sorokina-Nina Vislova continued their successful run in Yonex OCBC US Open GPG and marched into the semi-finals on Thursday, July 5, 2012.
They were up against local duo Iris Wang-Rena Wang in the quarter-final match and registered a splendid straight-set victory.
This hard fought tussle lasted for 34 minutes and was resolved with final figures of 21-15 and 22-20.
The victorious duo will now lock horns with Vita Marissa-Mona Santoso in the second last round of Grand Prix Gold tournament.
In quarter-final match, Valeri and Nina started the ball rolling by gaining a five-point advantage in the beginning of the first set.
World Number 21 pair launched a brisk attack and reached at score position of five. They doubled their lead by registering a striking total of 9-4. This initial advantage helped them to finish first half with an 11-8 margin.
After one-minute break, the US female shuttlers showed strong character and got into fighting position with 12 points but they could not step forward at a steady pace in the final moments.
The Russian couple picked up the pace and reinstated their dominance with three nonstop rallies in the third quarter of the set.
Valeri and Nina built pressure with 17-12 and then magnified the impact by putting convincing figure of 21-15.
Next game was filled with great sensation as at one stage Valeri-Nina cornered their opponents but then the suppressed duo managed to rise on their toes and registered their presence.
Though, the World Number 33 shuttlers Iris Wang and Rena Wang stayed grounded in most part of this closing segment but still earned a great deal of admiration for their late assault in the decider.
In the first half, they remained close until 4-3 but then a couple of fatal mistakes pushed them down to 3-8 score position. They managed to place a competitive total of 10-11 before the one-minute break.
Later part of the game was completely ruled by Valeri-Nina who snatched seven consecutive points right after the break and reached an authoritative position of 18-10.
However, the opposing team stormed back to bring the contest to right balance with 20-20. At this critical stage the Russian ladies fetched the ending two points in 22-20 margin.
