Valero Texas Open: Ben Curtis ends his title drought on the PGA Tour – Golf News
Ben Curtis carded an equal par score in the final round of the Valero Texas Open to end a six-year title drought on the PGA Tour by taking a two-stroke victory over Matt Every and John Huh on Sunday, April 22, 2012.
Despite the fact that Curtis went one-over par for the last 36 holes, he succeeded in posting a winning score in the end, which was nine-under par for the tournament.
Curtis was really pleased, especially after earning a victory, followed by two missed cuts this year.
“I mean last couple years I felt like I was so close to playing so many good tournaments and, you know, just ended up missing the cut by one or having a bad round here or there, and just haven't putted well,” he said. “Finally this week, you know, every
part of the game together”.
The victory marked his fourth win on the PGA Tour. In 2003, he was the unexpected winner of the British Open, as he defeated Thomas Bjorn and Vijay Singh with a one-stroke margin.
Thereafter, he remained winless for three years and made a comeback through a win in the 2006 Booz Allen Classic, followed by another victory in the 84 Lumber Classic in 2006.
Now again, he lost control over his game and went off the scene due to some poor performances on the course.
The 2011 season proved to be the worst, as he could not record a single top-10 finish throughout the season.
Curtis is now aiming to continue his great run this year by winning a couple of more events, which will help him stand among the best players on the tour.
"When you come out here and win one, well, if I win one every year I have a great career. That would be true," Curtis said.
"But, you know, to get to three, four, five wins -- you're a solid player. I just feel like you get yourself into contention and just have that belief, and anything can happen".
Every, the first round hero, carded a one-under par 71 in the final round, which was not enough to challenge Curtis on the leaderboard.
Huh, on the other hand, had a decent final round score of a three-under par 69. Yet, his first round score of a five-over par 77 eliminated the chances of his first victory of the season.
