Valero Texas Open ready for a tough challenge for the young guns – Golf News
The field of the Valero Texas Open at the Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio will showcase mainly the young guns this year from April 19 to 22, 2012.
Most of the big names such as Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood, Luke Donald, Tiger Woods and the latest winner of the Masters Tournament, Bubba Watson, are absent from the event.
This will allow many young players, who have yet to record a win on the PGA Tour, to contend for the top position on the leaderboard.
This is not the first time that Texas Open’s field is suffering the deficiency of elite players. Last year, too, witnessed young players contending for the win at the end of the tournament.
Brendan Steele, who was playing his rookie season on the PGA Tour, registered a win after signing his scorecard with an eight-under par tournament score.
Charley Hoffman and Kevin Chappell were tied for the second place after scoring seven-under par each. Yet, it does not mean that the absence of big names speaks of the low quality of the field at TPC San Antonio.
Matt Kuchar, JB Holmes, KJ Choi, Stuart Appleby, Cameron Tringale, Harris English and Danny Lee are to name a few who are confirmed to tee off this year.
Apart from these players, another thing that makes the tournament interesting is the venue’s tough layout. The Oaks Course is considered as one of the toughest golf courses all over the world hosting the PGA Tour events.
“I think the tournament says it is, ‘Unapologetically Texan,'” Jimmy Terry, General Manager of TPC San Antonio, said. “And, yes, the golf course is tough. It's designed to test players”.
“You just don't know how it's going to play,” added Boerne's Jimmy Walker, currently 42nd on the season money list.
“It's got a track record for being pretty tough. The wind blows, and it makes for a hard, long golf course. A lot of guys, for whatever reason, don't like to go and get beat up or whatever”.
Therefore, the experienced players who are appearing in the event will have to hold their nerves and play their natural game to be successful.
