Valery Rudnev trounces Michal Schmid to enter round two – Siberia Cup 2012 CH
Local qualifier, Valery Rudnev, trashed the Czech lucky loser, Michal Schmid, in straight sets at the Siberia Cup 2012 on Wednesday. He nudged up a 6-2, 6-2 victory against the 23-year-old to power into the second round at this ATP (Association of Tennis
Professionals) Challenger Tour event taking place from 19th to 25th September in Tyumen, Russia.
The local challenger showed awe-inspiring abilities to outmuscle Schmid in their first encounter. After ruling the match in 54 minutes, Rudnev comfortably progressed into the round of 16 at this indoor hard court event.
The Russian rising star assertively stepped into his home soil event. After the 23-year-old plucked his serve in the fourth game, Rudnev unleashed his true potential and wiped out the proceeding four games. He was never threatened with any barrier and cashed
both break chances to pull out the opener with a 6-3 score line.
Ranked 826th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Rudnev carried his winning ways in the following set. He swiftly bagged his entire serves without facing any breakpoint. The Russian cashed half of the four break opportunities
and ultimately pocketed the set with a 6-2 win.
Summing up the qualifier’s performance, Rudnev struck six aces and clobbered an equal first serve share of 63 per cent. He also impressively marked 26 out of 31 points on it and ended the match with 61 points.
The 24-year-old will square off against ninth seeded Radu Albot from Moldova. Albot crippled the local wild card entrant, Robert Ziganshin, with a breadstick to progress.
Seeded fourth in this event, Ivan Sergeyev also stole the spotlight later that day. He trashed the local contestant, Konstantin Kravchuk, in straight sets to advance.
The Ukrainian seed failed to block the only breakpoint he came across but capitalised on three out of eight break chances to formulate a 6-4, 7-5 score line. He produced a poor first serve share of 47 per cent as opposed to the Russian’s 65 per cent but
tremendously clicked 26 out of 30 points on it. Sergeyev also smashed three aces and ended the battle with 66 points.
