Question:

Valid Address for opening bank account, DL is different state

I have recently moved to a new state for college, and am looking to open a checking account locally. I know that opening a checking account usually requires an SS card, valid photo ID such as a driver's license, no outstanding debt to another bank, and a valid address.

My problem arises in the fact that my driver's license has my old address on it, from the previous state I lived in. The primary reason I have not got an updated drivers license for where I'm currently living is an issue that has to do with car insurance and license plates, which is a whole other story. It would be a mess to just get it all worked out that way.

What is a legitimate way of showing proof of valid address besides a drivers license?

  1. Well most banks won't except an out of state drivers license in the first place but if they do then you can bring in a piece of mail, like a bill, to show proof of address.  You can have a license from two different states that are both valid.

  2. Do you have a utility account?  A bill from an electric or phone company should work.  Or a copy of your lease might work as well.
