Valor and descretion?

Valor is the better part of discretion? Who made that up? I got into a "fight". And I was drinking and I know she was trashed. I let her bully me. I was just being calm. If I let loose, and lost my cool, she would be broken. But I chose to let her be a big bully. And just walk away. So what is that saying about valor and descretion?

"discretion is the better part of valor."  It means pick your fights wisely, and don't fight just for pride.
