Valtteri Bottas says Williams are better than the standings suggest – Formula 1 news
Williams reserve driver Valtteri Bottas has said that they are faster than their championship standing suggests.
Williams have fared well in the season so far and the team has shown potential to achieve more that it has achieved in the season. Their driver Pastor Maldonado secured his maiden victory in the season at the Spanish GP and later secured a podium finish.
Bottas has been driving the team’s other driver Bruno Senna’s car and has said earlier that he is very surprised by the pace he has been able to get from the car and hopes that the team will do even better as the season progresses.
Bottas is hoping that he will get a race seat with the team for 2013 and it is likely that he will be replacing Senna’s whose car he has already been driving on the Friday practice runs.
Senna has not had a good season with the team and with Maldonado showing his raw potential Senna will most likely lose out on the race seat for next year.
We are definitely improving and we are understanding much more about the car since the beginning of the year,” he said. “The direction is right all the time. Of course other teams are improving as well, but if we can up the good work and if everyone keeps
pushing I think we can still get some proper points.”
He was adamant that it is bad luck, not a lack of pace of the car that has kept Williams off the podium after the Spanish GP.
“I think the results we've got in the last few weekends, we've been really unlucky,” he said. “I think we should've had more points, there's been a lot of bad luck. The car has more pace than it's been showing.”
If Maldonado can repress his over ambitious streak and control the crashes, Williams and the Venezuelan can really move up the order and score some vital points.
It will be vital for Williams to come up with consistent performances after the summer break in order to improve. It will be interesting to see how the team fares.
