Question:

Value of a male calico kitten?

Okay, my calico cat just had kittens. A female yellow bobtail, a black and gray female bobtail, and what we think is a male calico long tail. He's starting to develope an orange/yellow color and he's already black and white.

My question is, "How much could I get for one?"

I know they exsist, so please don't say they don't. And I know how rare they are and how you can't breed one. Can someone please tell me?

Thanks in advance,

Sara.

  1. They happen sometimes, although yes they're rare.  They're generally sterile so there's no way to breed them intentionally.

I guess the price depends on how much people care and if the kitten really is a male calico.  Some people may see that as a really special thing and want to own one but since they're rare I don't think there's a standard value for them and people could probably find one in a shelter if they were willing to wait a bit.

Here's some information on calico's, the coloring and gender issue: http://vetmedicine.about.com/od/catbreed...

Please get your kitty spayed.  Shelters are already full and even if you sell your kitty (or whatever the plan is) you can't expect to get another male calico and you're taking away homes from other kittens who will be put down.  I'm not trying to be harsh, but the overpopulation is a huge issue.

  2. he is going to be sterile anyway so don't add even more homeless kittens to the world.  Domestic short hair cats are a dime a dozen.  I would say ask for a $30-$40 deposit and when they show proof that the kittens have been spayed/neutered and vaccinated then you can give them back their deposit.  don't give the kittens away before 8 weeks old and make an appointment at the vet for the mom to get her spayed in 6 weeks.

  3. Male calico kittens are very rare, but they are genetically abnormal, so the are undesirable to breeders, and people who know anything about cats-except as pets. You could only get big bucks for him if you could sell him to someone who knows nothing about cats!

  4. The chances of getting a male calico is 1000 to 1. Usually you need to X chromosomes to have a calico, so your males coloring is probably a freak mutation. Male calicos are sometimes worth 2 grand. But please, the chances are very low so make sure you know that it's a male! Besides, it sounds to me like they may be a little to young to tell, but if you're sure. Hope I helped! ;) WARNING! WARNING! MALES USUALLY DIE SHORTLY AFTER BIRTH!!!! GET HIM TO A VET IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Probably not much - True male calico or tortiseshell cats are extremely rare and usually sterile as you know already.  They suffer from what in humans is called Kleinfelter's Syndrome.  You might find someone who will give you a couple hundred bucks, but don't count on it unless he has truly beautiful markings..
