I have the copy of the stock, but I don't know if they were ever cashed in or not. How can I find out if the common stock has been cashed in and if not any value it may have. Thank you.

  1. ConAgra is still around and still a publicly-owned company.  The stock is currently around $21 but of course the stock may have split since your shares were received, so your old shares may be worth more than the $21/per.  ConAgra had splits in '97 and '92 and others before that.  Also, there were dividends you probably missed out on.  So do not assume you can only get $21 each for them.

Here is a link to the current status:

To find out more, you can contact ConAgra's investor relations department at

  2. You need to go to a brokerage account, ask friends and relatives if they can recommend one, and then the broker can open an account for you and find out the value of the paper you are holding. If it is actual shares of the company, depending on how old it is, there might have been some stock splits in which case you would have more shares of the stock than it says on the certificate. If it is just a statement, your husband might have already sold the stock and you have nothing of value, By the way if you are going to open an account just to sell the stock you have you should go to a discount broker that charges less commission like a Schwab, or fidelity, if you are thinking of investing your money to get higher interest to live on, you would probably want a very good bond broker at a full service firm who really knows what he is doing. If that is what you want email me and I will reocmmend someone for you.

  3. ConAgra (Food Inc.) Ticker CAG NYSE about $20.80 each ($416 less brokerage). I suspect it is still valid. Write to the Transfer Agent which should be on the certificate and ask them if it is still valid. Also you need to register the new beneficial owner, presumably yourself. I don't know anything about US probate law so hopefully someone else will answer that one.
