The founder of the publisher will not announce anything about any game until they have done enough to justify the excitement of the gaming community.
How often have gamers seen a brilliant teaser trailer for a game, or even a movie, and been blown away only to find that the final game, or movie, was less entertaining than watching Wigan Athletic play.
It seems that Gabe Newell, the founder of Valve, is hoping to avoid a similar situation as vowed not to make any premature announcements relating to any of the projects the publisher is working. That is until; they have enough substance to back it up.
“We’re sort of reaching in the other direction and saying ‘okay, well let’s have things a little more baked before we start getting people all excited about it.”
Many will take that as a direct reference to Half-Life 3, yet the boss also mentioned other titles as well.
“We recognize that it’s been a long time whereas we have so many games that people really love – Counterstrike, Half Life, Portal, Left 4 Dead, not a whole lot of Ricochet enthusiasts out there, and at the same time we want to be making sure that those games
and those stories and those characters are moving forward while also making sure that we don’t just get into terminal sequelitis.”
If the reader has never heard of the word, ‘sequelitis’ before then he or she need not worry as there is no cause for alarm. Newell was most certainly referring to how certain studios tend to release a new instalment in the series every year, thus spawning
sequel upon sequel.
That is where the word sequelitis comes from and the fact that Newell made it sound like a disease or condition shows that he is not someone who shares their belief of an annual release schedule.
All in all, it seems that Mr. Newell, in the politest way possible, is telling the gaming community to keep their pants on and be patient in regards to any Half-Life 3 or any other Valve related game news as well.
